18 months of barbarous war, half a million dead, entire cities in ruins, an environmental catastrophe in Kherson, shattered infrastructure, 8 million refugees and the potential for an escalation into a nuclear war that would kill us all…. and what do the Western tub-thumpers for war care about after all that and God only knows what lies ahead? Defeating Putin. No should be surprised by this – endless war is an end for them, not a means.
While many propagandists dishonestly purport to try and understand ‘the mind of Putin’ – they might do better to ingenuously try and understand the West’s obsession with Putin.
The collective west is utterly obsessed with Putin and the challenge a strong Russia poses to their swagger, greed, hubris and narcissism. Madness need not make sense but it can have a goal and this twisted obsession with Putin has long since escalated into madness.
Hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers died yesterday and for what? A small triangle of open fields. A slightly better tactical position around Bakhmut, a city already in ruins? A small trench system in the middle of nowhere?
This for Zelensky was a ‘happy day’ and the media outlets relayed his delight via every orifice of the propaganda machine.
Another day in the slaughterhouse that is Ukraine – more young lives cut short, more bereaved families with sobbing children, despairing wives and broken mothers. A ‘happy day’ for Zelensky and the news factory because there is some small scrap of evidence to take to the NATO summit in Vilnius that the west is getting some value for money.
A ‘happy day’ for arms manufacturers, excited YouTube bloggers, corporate media shills, right wing hustlers and neocon politicians. On this train of obsession with Putin everybody can ride, make money and feel happy – well everyone a long way away from any actual fighting and dying.
Look how this obsession with Putin has twisted the west.
Truth doesn’t matter – that was jettisoned long ago, we counter ‘Putin’s war propaganda’ with ceaseless bombardments of our own war propaganda, that it’s lies on both sides doesn’t matter any more.
Money doesn’t matter. Despite the UK spiralling down into an abyss of collapsing public services and economic disaster, the only thing its political class can agree on is that there must be ever more money and more weapons thrown into the bottomless pit of Ukraine.
Death doesn’t matter. That we risk the destruction of all life on earth via climate vandalism, biodiversity destruction and nuclear war no longer seems to register. All that matters is Putin.
What is the best case scenario for this obsession with Putin? His death? His removal from office? The break-up and destruction of Russia? What then? Will Putin be replaced by a supine puppet eager to usher in western multinationals so they can feast on Russia’s natural resources? That is unquestionably the dream of Washington’s neocons. Will increased profits looted from Russia for the shareholders of Chevron and Haliburton truly make the world a better place?
What if Putin is replaced by another more hard line oligarch – one more minded to launch tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine? Is that progress or the beginning of the end?
If Russia were to fall to absolute defeat with Ursula Von Der Leyen using Putin’s head as a footstool in the Kremlin, does anyone imagine it will end there?
NATO needs an enemy. The U.S. neocons need an enemy – someone to project their sociopathy on to. The global arms industry will need a new war and their focus will switch to China. An escalation of conflict that will unleash a tidal wave of economic disaster and military violence the like of which the world has never seen.
While I don’t expect the likes of Zelensky, Biden, Blinken, Putin, Shoigu or any of the cheerleaders for this grotesque chaos to suddenly regain their humanity, we as a global community must re-assert ours.
We must step back from any hatred of Russia or of Ukraine. We must place the desire for peace above the lust for revenge and victory. We must reconnect our hearts and weep about the suffering not just in Ukraine – but in Syria, Palestine, Yemen and elsewhere.
No good will come from this obsession with Putin, the deranged sociopaths that are endlessly filling this bloodbath owe their twisted existence to endless war, we must not indulge them any further.
How much are we prepared to sacrifice to these altars of hatred towards others? Or are we just content to let other families send their loved ones into the meat grinders of Ukraine while we stick our chests out and say how much we ‘stand with them’ on social media? Are you willing to chisel the words ‘we stood up to Putin’ on the graves of your loved ones? I’m not – he so isn’t worth it. None of them are.
Peace will only come when the remaining grown ups in the world confront our infantile ‘leaders’ and demand it. Let it start with me. Let it start with you.
Since 2013 I have worked on this Ad-Free site: trying to give a voice to those without the power or agency to speak out for themselves and speaking simple truths that well paid journalists in the corporate media dare not utter.
I am a home schooling parent on a low income – paying for the domain, web hosting and security entirely out of my own pocket.
If you find this website useful and could spare us a few shillings to help keep our lights on, it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you in solidarity with all our readers. John Lynch, Editor.
