FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if I’m interested in learning the flute / piano but don’t want to buy an instrument yet?

Flutes and pianos are expensive items and it is wise to have some lessons before purchasing either.

For those interested in flute lessons:

Some schools will rent you an instrument. Alternatively you can start on a fife, which is like a miniature flute made of plastic. It is a good instrument to begin on, gives you a feel of what learning the flute might be like and has the advantage of being inexpensive. Some pupils start on a tin whistle: the fingering is very similar to the flute.

For those interested in piano lessons:

Electronic keyboards, although clearly not the same as pianos, are often a good starting point. Second hand ones are frequently available at a reasonable price. Electronic keyboards have the added benefit of rhythm and tone variations, which might be of interest to you.

  • Can I have a few lessons before committing to a block, to find out if I like it?

After the first couple of lessons, I encourage students to commit to a block of lessons because learning an instrument, like many things, requires persistence and commitment. Under certain circumstances, a ‘pay-as-you-go’ arrangement is possible.

  • Can I experience your teaching before committing to a block of lessons?

Yes, absolutely. The first lesson is always an opportunity to meet me and for me to assess. After that, I am happy for pupils to experience a few lessons if they wish before they commit to a block of lessons.

  • Do I need to practise between lessons?

Students find that their progress is hugely dependent on time spent practising during the week. It’s one of those cases that the more you’re prepared to put into it, the more you’ll get out.

I’m always struck by the difference it makes when students get the hang of this and then their progress surges ahead, affecting greatly their enjoyment in playing.

  • How much time a week should I practise?

It’s a tried and tested reality that a little bit every day is better than a marathon session just before the lesson. The brain learns best a little often – and repetition is an integral part of kinaesthetic learning (ie learning through movement).

  • What is the minimum age for starting lessons?

Children vary and in my experience some as young as five can be ready to begin to engage seriously with the task of learning an instrument. Generally though, five turning six is the minimum age when children are ready to take on the task. A consistently expressed interest in learning is a good indication of a real degree of potential commitment.
