Gaza: We will never live down this shame.

I am lost for words. I don’t even know what to say anymore. My hands are trembling with anger and shock such that I can barely type.

The unwavering position of the UK government and indeed nearly all European governments about the ongoing atrocities committed by Israel in Gaza has just been confirmed by Minister Robert Jenrick to Sky News.

In response to the U.N. secretary-general, António Guterres saying, that there have been “clear violations of international humanitarian law” by Israel in Gaza, where over 5,700 civilians including 2,000 children have been killed by Israel since 7 October he had this to say:

“We don’t agree with that. If he is referring to what has happened over the course of the last two weeks, we don’t believe Israel has broken international law. There is a clear right in international law for a nation to defend itself, and that is what Israel is doing.

We do want to see Israel, wherever practical – and it is immensely difficult to do – to surgically degrade and eradicate Hamas. That is what they are trying to do and we obviously hope they succeed because the world will be a better place … it will be a blessing if we can rid the world of Hamas.”

To be clear, Israel has forced the civilian population of Northern Gaza, over a million people, to flee to the southern part of the Gaza strip  – then it has bombarded southern Gaza in the full knowledge that it forced civilians to relocate there. This fascist atrocity is waved away by Jenrick behind the mendacious canard of self-defence and the racist conflation of ALL Palestinians with Hamas.

Israel is not trying to surgically eradicate Hamas. it has not entered Gaza looking for them and has said explicitly that they are prioritising damage over accuracy, eradication over containment and that Gaza is to be reduced to a city of tents. All Israel wants is revenge on any Palestinian it can kill and then to annex Gaza via massacres and ethnic cleansing. This is fascism. 

In noting what the world can see in haunting and bloody detail in social media posts from Gaza, we see only that Israel is doing exactly what it said it would do. When the U.N says that this is against international law, Israel responds trying to bully the U.N. – calling for the sacking of António Guterres and saying that they will “teach the U.N. lesson”.

We are witnessing a fascist massacre of innocents in Gaza and the political and media class of the USA, UK and most of Europe are not merely supporting it, they are trying to hide it and manufacture consent for it.

I am crying as I type this. We in the west will never live down this shame. Never.
