Is the West ‘defending democracy’ in Ukraine? Just look away now from France – and Ukraine.

The U.N has asked France to address “deep issues of racism and racial discrimination in law enforcement”.

There are nationwide protests about this. The French government flatly dismisses the critique saying:

“Any accusation of racism or systemic discrimination in the police force in France is totally unfounded”

– this despite a 17 year old Algerian teenager being murdered by a police officer during a traffic stop – just one of a long history of racist incidents. People don’t protest like this for nothing. 

There are mass arrests. Public gatherings banned. Drones are being deployed and curfews introduced.

Macron dare not show his face in a public space – loathed as he is by multiple sections of French society.

The French government is leaning hard on social media companies to censor free speech and the organisation of protests. The western corporate media is shovelling shit frantically to portray the protests and protestors as ‘copy cat’ teenage rioters.

Over in Ukraine, president Zelensky has breezily announced the end of Ukrainian elections until further notice and hiked tax rates at the behest of the IMF.

The west via the EU / IMF / ERB are merrily looting Ukraine with the kind of vulture loans and neo-liberal ‘structural adjustments’ that have killed and immiserated tens of millions in Africa over many decades.

The voters of Ukraine will now have no say in this whatsoever, because the war they are fighting for NATO provides the perfect excuse to suppress democratic freedoms indefinitely.

Opposition parties in Ukraine have been banned with dissenting voices arrested and detained without trial. Dissenting media platforms have been shut down, licences for war correspondents have been sharply curtailed, now mostly issued only to compliant western media organisations like Sky News – with almost none issued to Ukrainians.

Conscription into Ukraine’s war is now total and mandatory with young men bundled kicking and screaming into unmarked vans by the Ukrainian military.

Ursula Von Der Leyon famously remarked that Ukrainians were ‘willing to die for European perspective’ and now their willingness is quite beside the point – they have to go and die for them.

So Ukrainians waking up to a nightmare of corruption, conscription, political repression and oppressive security surveillance – are also disenfranchised as the west steals their nation via economic imperialism. Their nation has been duped into fighting for NATO and as a reward they are being economically raped by the usual suspects.  

The West for its part has also been quite happy to ignore the gathering neo-Nazi infiltration of the Ukrainian armed forces because of the cause we are told that is the sine qua non of the whole bloodbath… to ‘defend democracy’ of course!

Just don’t look at France – or indeed Ukraine if you want to remain feeling all warm inside about that.
