Starmerism: Don’t say we didn’t warn you

As soon as the Labour right managed to sabotage the Corbyn project and install Keir Starmer as their wrecking ball, we told you that no person with any self respect or morality should remain in Labour. Many agreed, and our short rant urging an immediate divorce between the baleful prospect of Starmerism and any kind of progressive politics became one of our most widely shared articles ever.

I haven’t posted much since – I see little point. Where once there existed the possibility of a real political choice, of democracy within the Labour movement (that would have sidelined its internal saboteurs forever) and of a genuinely principled politics…we now have the hollow pantomime of two tory parties distinguished solely by the colour of their rosette and meaningless tribal loyalty.

In truth the reclamation of Labour by the establishment has been even worse than my darkest fears. Nightmare right-wing ghouls thought dead and buried in Labour’s dismal ‘new Labour’ past have oozed up from beneath every floorboard and incredibly Labour’s lurch to the right has been so gleeful that it now places them to the right of the Tories. What a disaster – a Tory party still surfing the Brexit wave with aplomb and an ‘opposition’ placed somewhere to the right of Farage – no wonder Labour’s membership is collapsing as all the hope of the Corbyn era fades away.

Strike a beat against the bells of the church of Starmer and what comes back is the chime of right-wing establishment revenge coupled with a frantic desire to ensure that morality and democracy will never get another foothold in Labour.

The ruthless weaponisation of anti-Semitism has been the baseball bat of choice for the thuggish return of the usual suspects. First it was directed at any Corbyn supporter they could find, being a political opponent of Starmer was justification enough – thus Rebbeca Long-Bailey was smeared as a racist and then of course Corbyn himself. By embracing the definitions of anti-Semitism touted by unapologetic Zionists , Labour has set a spring loaded trap for anyone with the decency not to abandon the Palestinians to their fate.

Labour has deliberately conflated any criticism of Israel’s atrocities with racism. The deployment of anti-Semitism as a political weapon by the Labour right has now reached the level of absurdity – simply critcising Starmer (who isn’t Jewish) is now deemed to anti-Semitic.

Naturally as the corporate lobbyists and spin doctors popped champagne corks and reoccupied the leather swivel chairs that the Corbyn era had temporarily deprived them of, it was natural that the re-captured Labour party would turn to Lord Peter Mandelson for merry advice on how to ‘repair Labour’s relationship with business’.  When Starmer heard about Tory plans to raise corporation tax in the national interest his instinct (the reflex of a true Tory) was to oppose it – but Starmer is not merely a poodle for corporate power, he is selling out every principle that defines the Labour movement.

When Starmer heard about Tory plans to provide de facto immunity for UK service personnel facing allegations of war crimes (effectively legalising torture and war crimes), he decided that Labour would fold its hands and say nothing. That he subsequently climbed down, disguises nothing about the mans moral bankruptcy, indeed the list of things that the post-Corbyn Labour party has nothing to say about is breathtaking.

126,000 dead from Covid-19 – save from the USA, the worst governmental response in the world and all the direct result of Tory bungling and cronyism… but Starmer has nothing much to say about it. Starmer’s half-hearted technical enquires are buffed mercilessly by The Guardian et al but still convince nobody that he really cares. If only Starmer had the moral backbone to call Boris Johnson out for his lies and criminal negligence – to truly stand up for the families of the dead – fat chance. Starmerism is a philosophy of right wing political occupation and asset stripping – not any kind of moral code.

Naturally Labour no longer has anything much to say about Brexit or the hollow lies that sold it, the ongoing privatisation of the NHS or climate change…. and its revived love for nuclear weapons has now been deemed ‘non-negotiable’.

In a few short months Starmer has transformed Labour from a beacon of moral hope into a party with policies that I despise more than the Tories.

Well we told you so and this is just the start – God only knows what ignominious shame he will heap atop the Labour movement before he steps through the revolving door to claim his reward in corporate life and the House of Lords.

I have one question of anyone still wasting their time within the Labour movement – what ON EARTH are you still doing there? For the love of God – LEAVE – lose the phone number of this right wing horror show forever. Start today to build a genuinely socialist political party…

…or stay in Labour and provide camouflage for nothing less than the ransacking and humiliation of the politics of morality itself.
